CODING THE SKIN

0002: CODING THE SKIN brings to life an idea from 2020, inspired by the ubiquitous QR codes during the pandemic: Can we code jewellery into the skin? This concept is explored in two forms: a necklace that echoes traditional jewellery as an 'object to be worn,' and a temporary tattoo that envisions jewellery as a second skin. Through Augmented Reality, this work reveals 'its true colours,' allowing us to play and interact with the multidimensional gems.

I see this initial approach as a sketch for future work that would push the boundaries of jewellery design. Using cutting-edge materials like transparent, skin-adaptive polymers, the next iteration could create jewellery that seamlessly fuses with the wearer’s body. This material, while appearing like a second skin, would remain detachable, offering both intimacy and flexibility. This vision explores a future where jewellery is not just worn but becomes an organic extension of the body.

COLOUR STORIES

Curated by Marcos Guzman as part of RADIANT PAVILION 2024.
14—18 September 2024, Nicholas Building, level 6, room 21, Melbourne, Australia.

‘Colour Stories’ shines a light on the hues the participating artists choose to feature in their work examining deep-rooted meaning, cultural resonances and personal narratives that draw out different shades of their artistic practice. The exhibition contemplates the evolving nature of jewellery and objects and their shifting values over time, and how colour becomes a marker for inspiring artistic values and meanings. It is an opportunity for unravelling the dynamic narratives and diverse perspectives within the spectrum of contemporary jewellery and object creation.
